Laminate, and Melamine – Which Finish Kitchen Cabinets to Choose?

Some people think that the most important thing to pay attention to when choosing your kitchen cabinets is the color, size, or type of handles.  But the truth is that the important thing is your kitchen finish. You need to create a completely different look no matter what material the cabinets are made of. However,  many people get confused when it comes to choosing a suitable kitchen finish that will work best in your kitchen.

In this article, we will walk you through the options you can choose from and some of the advantages and disadvantages of both. We are going to bandy two of the most popular choices which are melamine and laminate coating. Choosing the right finish for your kitchen closets is essential to icing that they last and maintaining their candescent look for times to come.

The Importance of Kitchen Cabinet Finish

When planning your kitchen, the durability of the finishes is one of the most important considerations, as this will save you from the inconvenience of having to maintain it every two years and withstand sandpaper, dust, paint smell, and general.

Laminate, and Melamine – Which Finish Kitchen Cabinets to Choose? 1

Laminate VS Melamine

  • Laminate Kitchens

Laminate is a material used to cover a substrate such as plywood or particleboard, which is typically used to build kitchen cabinets.  Plastic laminate, often referred to as high-density plastic lamination, is a resin-coated paper backed with a layer of phenolic resin that is bonded to the base with an adhesive.

  • Melamine Kitchens

Melamine is created very similarly to laminated kitchens however it is done at low pressure, and thus is often referred to as MDL (medium-density laminate).  It is made by gluing layers of paper under low pressure and the resin embeds the material onto the substrate, without using any glue adhesive.

Laminate and melamine kitchen range

Laminate and melamine are available in a range of prints, colors, and finishes including high gloss and low gloss.  In general, laminate has more colors and patterns than melamine. Since the edges aren't rolled as smoothly as in polyurethane kitchens, you can get more creative with the colors on the tape edges if you want to mix it up a bit.

The durability of laminate and melamine kitchen

The compound used to make laminate and melamine is very durable.  However, because these finishes are applied by wrapping them around the base (not painted over the board as polyurethane kitchens do), they have edges that can become bare and peel off, leaving the base wood exposed.

Over time, exposure to water can cause swelling in the internal structure as well, so they must be maintained carefully to avoid this.  Heat can also cause problems for laminated coatings from items such as toasters and kettles, especially on the sidebar.  These finishes are also less resistant to chips compared to polyurethane kitchens.

You must be careful when cleaning laminate and melamine finishes because abrasive liquids and harsh cleaning tools can scratch the surface.

If you need to replace laminate or laminate, this can be tougher than a polyurethane kitchen as laminate and melamine suppliers change their colors and finishes over time.  However, with good maintenance and careful use, you can keep these cabinets in perfect condition for years to come.

All About Laminate And Melamine Kitchen Cabinets

There are two types of kitchen cabinets: laminate and melamine. Laminate cabinets are made from a plastic laminate material that is glued to a plywood or particleboard substrate. Melamine cabinets are made from a melamine-covered particleboard or MDF substrate.

If you're considering new kitchen cabinets, you may be wondering about the difference between laminate and melamine. Both are popular choices for kitchen cabinets, but there are some key differences to consider. Laminate is a type of plastic that is glued to a base layer of particle board or MDF. Melamine is also a type of plastic, but it is combined with formaldehyde to create a hard, durable surface. Laminate is available in a wide range of colors and patterns, and it can mimic the look of wood or stone. Melamine is typically white or off-white, but it can be painted any color you like. One key advantage of laminate cabinets is that they're easy to clean; just wipe them down with a damp cloth. Melamine cabinets are also quite durable and resistant to stains and scratches. However, laminate can be damaged by heat, so take care not to place hot pans directly on the surface. Both laminate and melamine cabinets are less expensive than solid wood cabinetry. So which one should you choose? It really depends on your personal preferences and budget. If you want an easy-to-care-for cabinet with a wide range of color options, laminate may be the way to go. If you prefer a tougher surface that can withstand more wear and tear, melamine could be the better choice.
